Today your students will be getting back their summer reading packets. First, THANK YOU to all the students who read over the summer (and the parents who helped and supported your students!). One of the number one complaints I hear from parents is that summer reading projects don't seem to "do" anything. I wanted to take a minute and just explain what happens with the work that was turned in in this room.
First, I read all the work turned in. I "graded" it, and recorded which questions students seemed to struggle with the most. As I noticed trends, I will be using that information to guide my reading and writing instruction in each class this year. Therefore, your student may have missed 1 or more questions (most of my students did), and that is okay. If students did the work and turned it in, they will receive a 100 (in this case a 5/5). I will use the ones that they missed to reinforce concepts going forward. If students did not receive the summer reading packet, or lost it, or dropped it in the pool, it will not hurt them at the beginning of the year, they just won't have that extra "100" to start off the year.
I hope this fully explains how summer reading worked this past year. Reading over the summer is SO important, and I am so heartened to see so many assignments turned in! Thank you!!
